美國前總統卡特卸任3年後，於1984年訪問了廣島；美國國務卿凱瑞日前訪問了廣島；這是較著名的2次。至於歐巴馬訪廣島，主因有二，一是宣示他反核武的一貫立場，二是強化日本與美國的同盟關係，尤其是面對崛起的中國大陸，這種同盟關係格外重要。

美國媒體曾報導，日本70%受訪者不知道廣島原爆的日期（1945年8月6日）。而根據前幾年「維基解密」披露，日本外務省官員曾告訴美國，美國最好不要為廣島原爆道歉，免得反核人士趁機大作文章，反對日美軍事同盟。

但是美國國內的反對聲音不小，有論者謂，歐巴馬訪廣島時，不應該道歉，連「遺憾」都不應該說。因為1945年時，凶殘暴虐的日本帝國拒絕投降，使用具有絕對震懾力的原子彈是美國的唯一選擇，否則二次大戰不知道還要打多久。
